Hi! ☺ I was born on April
27, 1927. My place of birth was Heiberger, Alabama. My parents were
Bernice McMurry and Obadiah. I walked five miles a day to attend the
one- room schoolhouse crossroad schools in Marion, Alabama, while the
white students rode the buses to all white school close-by. I excelled
at my studies, particularly music, and was veledicoration of my
graduation class at Lincoln High School. I graduated in 1945 and
received a scholarship to Antioch College in Yellow. I was the first
lady of civil rights. I performed Freedom Concerts as fundraiser for
the civil rights movement. I was first woman to deliver the Class Day
address at Harvard. I was the first woman to preach at a statutory
service at St.Paul’s Cathedral in London. I served as a women’s strike
for peace delicate to the 17-nation Disarmament Conference in Geneva,
Switzerland in 1962. I became a liaison to the international peace and
justice organizations. In 1969, I published the first volume of my
autobiography. I married Martin on June 13,1953. I studied violin at
New England Conservatory. I got involved in the bus boycott that worked
against segregation. In 1956, racist people bombed my home. Martin and
I had 4 children. On April 4, 1968 Martin was murdered. Then, I started
The Center of Nonviolent Social change as a living memorial to my
husband’s life and death. Who am I?
